Faster After Effects by renice

After Effects normally drown your mac, especially when you have not a lot of memory. What happen when you renice the process related to After Effects? Machine fly fast.

By renice the process related to After Effects and some related to the system you will have your mac run better. Just launch this script after launching after effects and render a few frames (ram preview, render).

The script will renice the priority of After Effects processes, and some others that will let you not hang After itself. And let you run iTunes, Dropbox without problems when working with After Effects.

Improve you render times with After Effects…

With this you will fly fly fly like a very fast plane with your renders. I make the test with a very complex scene composed in a big composition 5000x7000 pixels, with a lot of elements. Outside this composition camera moves within a 1025x576 composition.

If you renders as is, in FULL - Current options + Motion Blur activated the composition gives me approximately 1h of render.

Then if you select a view port (that cover all the composition 1024x576) in same conditions the render only takes 5 minutes!!!!

Sync folder icons with Dropbox (Mac osx)

As you know, with Dropbox all is in Sync between computers, but there is something that doesn’t sync: Custom Folder Icons. To solve this I wrote this to automator actions (services). With this you can select a bunch of folders (with custom icons) and launch the menu option Dropbox - Backup folder Icons from the Services menu in Finder. Then when Dropbox sync, in the other computer you whant to recover this icons, just launch the other service: Dropbox - Recover folder Icons.

INSTALL

Just expand the zip after download and move the services to your user ~/Library/Services.

NOTE: To make work this services is needed the setfile command, that comes with the developers tools, if you don’t have it installed just download from the above link and follow this instructions.

In the first computer select folders (with custom icon)…

… then launch the service to backup icons.

In the second computer select the folders

… and launch the recover service

Just a quick Tip

To do arrow effects (2D animated arrows) the better is to use text on a path, for the line make use of a lot of little circles with little keening and ends on a triangle with simbol typoraphy, very fast and easy to control.

Just a quick Tip

In a Mac Pro (4 processors or more) make use of the BG Render script and launch in the same machine renders to TIF with the Render Option (Skip existing frames). Just launch the render 4 times or more (it depends on the numbers of processors you have on your machine) in LOW priority. The render will end soon than with multiprocessing on. Also the machine doesn’t hang and you will still makeing use of Mail/iTunes/… without problems.

After Effects Cocoe Battalion

Some time ago we did a battalion system for After Effects, which is more or less a controlled system of particles.

A “battalion system” unlike a “particle system” does not have an emitter, instead is a set of elements (the battalion) that walk down a road, but in the end of the path they stop in a determined position.

In the beginning the script was intended only for 2D, but with the help of a collaborator (who is a genie named Stephane Hillaire) we port the script to 3D world.

We decided after deliberation to bring out the script, so you can download it from:

Installation
Just copy the makeicon folder generated in the dmg file to your applications folder.

How to use?

You can use this app from the finder’s toolbar by drag the makeicon.app to your finder’s toolbar, or you can use it like as regular application.

Simply open it

Just open the application and it will ask you to select the folder to change the icon, select one.
Then it will ask you to select a bunch of images (at least one)
This will change the folder icon container, creating a icon representation of the selected content.

The Drag & Drop way

Select a bunch of images (or just one) or folder of your desire and drag & drop it over makeIcon
makeIcon will launch. In case you Drag & Dropped a folder, it will ask you to select a bunch of images (at last one)
This will change the folder icon container, creating a icon representation of the selected content.

The selection way (it will work if you have makeIcon on the finder’s toolbar *

Select a group of images within a folder or a folder of your desire
Launch makeicon (is you selected a folder it will ask you for a selection of images)
This will change the folder icon container, creating a icon representation of the selected content.

Instalación
Arrastra la carpeta makeicon a la carpeta de aplicaciones.

Simplemente lanza la aplicación

Abre la aplicación y te saldrá una ventana para seleccionar la carpeta que quieres modificar.
Después te pedirá que selecciones un grupo de imágenes (al menos una)
A continuación makeIcon cambiará el icono de la carpeta

Cocoe es un germen. Ya existía mucho antes de que Gabriel Suchowolski y Jean Duprez se conociesen, incluso mucho antes de que nacieran, aún más, ya existía mucho antes de que a Leonardo le regalaran su primera caja de plastidecor ó que Heratóstenes se planteara si se podría jugar al fútbol con la tierra. Existe desde el principio. Mucha gente se cuestiona qué es el arte, lo artístico ó simplemente lo estético. Cocoe no, porque tiene conciencia de ello, es plenamente consciente de que todo depende de si mismo, que sin él ninguno de estos términos existiría. ¿Cual es el motivo de que Cocoe eligiese a Duprez y Gabriel? ¿Ó fue al reves? ¿Qué relación tiene con la alimentación? (Cacao: en la lengua de Blake, Cocoa) ¿Existe alguna relación entre Cocoe y la afición de los surrealistas de principios del siglo XX al cacao caliente? No olvidemos la importancia del cacao en el Arte Maya, y cómo los diseñadores precolombinos aprovechaban de su estimulo para la creación. En este caso ¿fue primero la bebida que les estimulaba en la creación, ó el éxtasis creativo el que les impulsó a asociar a Cocoe con la bebida? Estas preguntas, y muchísimas más habría que preguntárselas al propio Cocoe sea lo que sea, si es que esto es posible, pero la reflexión que nos deja es la siguiente ¿Son conscientes de estos hechos y coincidencias Gabriel y Duprez, ó por el contrario son meros instrumentos de Cocoe? Sea cual sea la respuesta, hay algo seguro, que forma parte de una conspiración, “La Conspiración Cocoe”.

Que Cocoe utiliza herramientas es algo evidente, y es un hecho irrefutable que estas son personas con capacidad creativa. Dicen que las casualidades no existen, y desde el prisma de Cocoe, el destino es un hecho tan real cómo la ingenuidad humana.

En el pasado existieron diferentes oportunidades para que Gabriel y Duprez se conociesen, pero no fue hasta el año 2000 que coincidieron. Los comienzos nunca son buenos, y según dicen son las mejores parejas, las más duraderas, aquellas que miden primero sus diferencias antes que sus parecidos. Ahí estaba Cocoe.

Los dos trabajaban en una de las principales agencias interactivas del momento, siendo esto un dudoso honor, y corrían los tiempos de la todavía increíble burbuja de Internet. Duprez trabajaba como director-productor del área audiovisual de puntoTV y Gabriel como director del área de desarrollo de videojuegos de ONEZ.

Todo se vino abajo cuando el 11 de septiembre despiden al 75% de la plantilla y poco después a su totalidad. Cocoe se ve replegado en espera de buenas nuevas que le permitan resurgir. Después de aquellos sucesos traumáticos pasó un año que no hizo sino reforzar aún más los lazos entre Duprez y Gabriel. Un año bastante aburrido donde tuvieron que sufrir el duro yugo del desprecio en la compañía donde trabajaban, cuyo clímax se resolvió como un nuevo nacimiento de Cocoe, como única solución al tedio y al mal gusto reinante.

Este nacimiento de Cocoe no hubiese sido posible sin el trabajo anterior, sin las dichas y desdichas anteriores. Gabriel y Duprez trabajaron duro en aquellos tiempos como única válvula de escape. Así fueron fundadores en el colectivo domestika, y crearon piezas de video como DMSTK DV1.

Viejas y nuevas obras vieron la luz en el resurgimiento de Cocoe. Gabriel y Duprez han trabajado como Directores de Arte en spots publicitarios de renombre y continúan hoy en día realizando obras llenas de esos detalles que tanto les gusta hacer. Pero son las piezas y proyectos más personales los que refuerzan su visión de Cocoe. Proyectos como instalaciones interactivas de video o exposiciones multidisciplinares que llegarán a lo largo del tiempo, verán reflejado un esfuerzo por elevar los limites de la estética.
